Title

Corporal Andrew Jackson Daniel

Subject

Company F (the "Trio Guards"), 61st Regiment N.C. Troops

Description

Andrew Jackson Daniel of Wayne County enlisted at Goldsboro on May 16, 1862, in a company known as the “Trio Guards,” subsequently Company F, 61st Regiment N.C. Troops. (The company was raised in Wilson, Greene, and Pitt Counties during March-May, 1862, which may explain its name. Daniel was a native of Greene County.)

In February 1863, Clingman’s Brigade, to which the 61st North Carolina belonged, was sent to South Carolina and remained in the Charleston area until November. On June 25, Daniel was detailed as an orderly from Colonel James D. Radcliffe, and in July was promoted to corporal. On August 26, the 61st North Carolina, then part of garrison of Battery Wagner, defended that bastion from an attempt to storm it by two Federal regiments. Casualties amounted to ninety-seven men, eight men killed or mortally wounded, twenty-two wounded, and sixty-seven captured. One of the wounded was Daniel, who was hit in the hand.

Daniel was hospitalized at Charleston, then sent home on wounded furlough on September 19. He returned to duty by the end of 1863, however, and was reported present through May 6, 1864. It is likely that Daniel sustained a severe illness or wound in May-June 1864, because on July 22 he was retired to the Invalid Corps. That unit had been established in February 1864 and was comprised of disabled soldiers who were able to do some kinds of limited duty. An October 31, 1864, muster roll of men in the Invalid Corps who reported to “Col. S.D. Pool, commanding Post of Goldsboro, N.C.,” reports Daniel as present. There are no further military records for him.

Daniel (October 4, 1842-December 9, 1872) is buried at the Cromwell Cemetery, Tarboro, Edgecombe County.
