Description

Alfred F. Goodman
1838 – 1916
Company C, 4th North Carolina State Troops

A native of Iredell County, twenty-three year old Alfred F. Goodman enlisted at Statesville in Company C, 4th North Carolina State Troops on June 7, 1861. Goodman was present with the regiment until wounded severely in the head during the battle of Seven Pines on May 31, 1862. In fact, it was during this action that the 4th regiment suffered over fifty percent casualties.

Goodman returned to duty, only to be reported as missing in action on or about July 2-3 during the battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Subsequently, Goodman was captured and confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware. In October of 1863, he was transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland. During his time at Point Lookout, Goodman contracted small pox, and remained in the prison’s small pox hospital for nearly a month, returning to the main prison population on February 8, 1864. Goodman remained at Point Lookout for a total of sixteen months until ultimately exchanged on February 20-21, 1865, at Boulware and Cox’s Wharfs, James River, Virginia. A few days later, Goodman appeared on a roll of detached soldiers present at Camp Lee, Virginia. It is unknown whether he returned to the 4th North Carolina, but he does not appear on the Appomattox rolls.

After the War, Alfred Goodman married Rebecca Shinn in Iredell County in1866, but the couple settled in Rowan County shortly thereafter, where they would remain the rest of their lives, raising a family of six children. Goodman was active in the Atwell community as a farmer and also served an Elder at the Thyatira Presbyterian Church for nearly forty years.

Alfred F. Goodman died on January 16, 1916, at the age of 77 years old. He and his wife are buried at the church cemetery at Thyatira Presbyterian Church.
