Unidentified

Subject

North Carolina Soldier

Description

This photograph of an unidentified soldier in a militia-style uniform was published in 1972 on page 18 of William Albaugh’s book, More Confederate Faces. The caption accompanying the image reads “Fig. 39 A handsome Southern Volunteer Officer from N.C.” An endnote states that it is a sixth-plate ambrotype and was owned by Mr. Albaugh himself.

The same image also appears on p. 204 of Dominic Serrano’s book, Still More Confederate Faces, published in 1992, still identified as a North Carolinian, with the additional note that the uniform had Rifleman’s buttons.

The ambrotype is now in the possession of the Liljenquist Collection, Library of Congress. However, the online description of it at http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/lilj/item/2012648982/ makes no mention of its North Carolina provenance. It seems likely that Mr. Albaugh identified the subject as a North Carolinian because he had reason to do so, and I believe the loss of its partial identification must have been an oversight that occurred as the image transferred from one owner to another.
