Description

This image of a North Carolina lieutenant was acquired by the N.C. Office of Archives and History in 1953, apparently without identification.

The original, presumably an ambrotype, was made in the studio of the noted Richmond photographer, Charles R. Rees, as evidenced by the column and chair, seen in many Rees photographs. The unknown lieutenant is remarkably similar in both pose and uniform to the subject of another Rees portrait, Captain William F. McRorie, Company A (the “Iredell Blues”), 4th Regiment N.C. State Troops, who was killed in action at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. The chief difference is the presence of a book under McRorie’s left arm, presumably inserted to accommodate his slightly greater height.
