Subject

Company D (the “Forsyth Rifles”), 21st Regiment N.C. Troops (11th Regiment N.C. Volunteers)

Description

The case containing this sixth-plate ambrotype of William Franklin Vogler is inscribed “Raleigh N C May 1861.” Although Vogler may have visited Raleigh in May, on the twenty-second of that month he enlisted at Salem in the “Forsyth Rifles,” subsequently Company D, 21st Regiment N.C. Troops.

The four surviving muster rolls for Company D and several brigade-level lists of men detailed to extra duty report that Vogler was on detail as a regimental teamster from at least January 1863 through February 1865. For that service he was paid an additional twenty-five cents per day. There are no military records for Vogler after February 1865.

William F. Vogler (April 11, 1843-November 21, 1901) is buried at Bethania Moravian God’s Acre, Bethania, Forsyth County.
